Overview

Hajj

The total of pilgrims recorded in 2025 was 1,673,230, consisting of 166,654 internal (10.0%), and 1,506,576 external pilgrims (90.0%).

In 2025, among internal pilgrims, 53.0% were men and 47.0% women, while among external pilgrims, 52.4% were men and 47.6% women.

In 2025, regarding the arrival of external pilgrims, 95.3% of foreign pilgrims arrived to Makkah al-Mukarramah via air transport, 4.4% by land transport, and 0.3% by sea transport.

The pilgrim service sector had a total labor force of 236,897 people in 2022, including supervision, public services, health, transportation, and telecommunications services.

In 2022, medical services were provided to 22,644 pilgrims, encompassing procedures such as cardiac catheterization, dialysis, emergency care, and hospitalization. Additionally, a total of 900 medical services and pieces of equipment were provided to the pilgrims.

During Hajj season of 2022, there were 6 slaughterhouses where 443,102 animals were sacrificed. Additionally, 7,246 butchers were working in the slaughterhouses inside the holy sites.

External and Internal Pilgrims

Arrivals

In 2025, the majority of foreign pilgrims, 95.3% traveled to Makkah al-Mukarramah via air transport, while 4.4% opted for land transport, and 0.3% arrived by sea.

Makkah Route Initiative

In 2024, a total of 322,901 pilgrims from 7 countries benefited from the Makkah Route Initiative. Of these, 39.9% were from Indonesia, 23.4% from Bangladesh,16.5% from Pakistan,9.5% from Malaysia,5.8% from Türkiye,2.8% from Morocco,2.0% from The Ivory Coast.

* The Makkah Route Initiative is one of the Saudi Vision 2030 projects. The initiative enables pilgrims to complete entry procedures to Saudi Arabia in their homeland, and provides direct transportation to their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah.

Note: As the country-wise data for the Makkah Route Initiative is not published by Gastat for the year 2024, we assume that the relative share of countries for the year 2024 remains almost the same as that of 2023.

Labor Force

Labor Force in Pilgrims Service Sector

The pilgrim service sector had a total labor force of 236,897 in 2022. This included 113,800 in supervision, 73,556 in public services, 26,392 in health services, 19,421 in transportation, and 3,728 in telecommunications services.

Health

Medical Services

The total number of pilgrims attended by medical services in 2022 was 22,644.

The main medical services provided to pilgrims were Emergency (18,277 pilgrims), Hospitalization (2,463 pilgrims), and Dialysis (797 pilgrims).

Medical Facilities and Teams

During Hajj 2022, a total of 900 medical facilities and teams were provided to pilgrims. Of this total, 265 were medical teams, 474 operational units, 138 health centers and 23 hospitals.

Communications and Information Technology

Communications and Information Technology Sector

During Hajj season of 2022, at Makkah - Holy Sites, the average daily consumption per capita amounted to 851.13 MB, with an average data download speed of 251.06 MB/s and data upload speed of 32.9 MB/s. The total data consumption reached 36.19 Thousand TB.

Additionally, the daily rate of subscriptions to local SIM cards reached 3,000,000 SIM cards, while the daily rate of subscriptions to foreign SIM cards reached 72,000 SIM cards.

During the 2022, the Mataf capacity was 107,000 individuals per hour and the capacity of the Grand Mosque was 2,000,000 individuals.

Slaughterhouses and Slaughtered Animals

Animal Sacrifices

During Hajj season of 2022, there were 6 slaughterhouses where 443,102 animals were sacrificed.

The main slaughterhouses were Al moaisem slaughterhouse (1) where 153,000 animals were slaughtered (34.5% of the total animals slaughtered in the season) and Alwahda slaughterhouse (F) where 63,500 animals were slaughtered (14.3% of the total for the season)
